At Cornish College horse riding is not just a sport, it’s a partnership. Whether you have your own mount, or you get to know one of the lovely horses and ponies at Jolong Park, the connection that can be achieved between a rider and a horse is special.
It can make you feel happy and positive and lower your stress levels. It can naturally stimulate the production of serotonin, giving you a sense of wellbeing. Horse riding can give you a sense of freedom that no other sport can match.
Some people ride simply to relax and unwind outdoors. Others want to focus on training and learning new skills such as dressage or jumping. When you ride, you never stop learning! This gives you a powerful sense of achievement, especially as you make progress towards new goals.
Riding combines a cardiovascular workout with a rewarding mental challenge. It helps improve your fitness and balance, builds muscle tone, encourages muscle strength and improves hand-eye coordination and joint mobility. It helps a rider to manage their emotions as they share the riding experience together with their mount.
Horse riders are typically a social crowd. With a shared love of horses, riders at Cornish College may find that they make friends for life.

Prep to Year 12 students wishing to undertake equestrian lessons are able to attend lessons at Jolong Park Equestrian Centre (128 Riverend Road, Bangholme).
Jolong Park is a world-class horse facility and an Australian Government Accredited Registered Training Organisation located across the road from Cornish College at 128 Riverend Road, Bangholme.
Lessons for Cornish College students run after school hours during term time. The student program is designed to provide riding lessons in addition to horsemanship and ground management skills. Riders are assessed in their first lesson to determine their skill level.
A 90 min Group Lesson for Student Riders with a horse supplied is $69
A 60 min Group Lesson for Mounted Riders is $42.50
A 60 min Group Lesson for Adult Riders with a horse supplied is $57
Bus 6 will transport the equestrian students to Jolong Park for their lessons. Please be advised that students crossing Riverend Road without adult supervision is highly discouraged. For the first lesson, we ask that a parent of each child or children is in attendance in order to see first hand what your children will be experiencing, but also, importantly, to sign the indemnity form that Jolong Park requires before your child can participate in a lesson. Please note that all students are covered by the College’s insurance for this activity as part of our co-curricular program.
Riders will be expected to purchase their own helmet and riding boots as this makes the experience safer and more comfortable, however, in the short term, Jolong Park is able to provide loan helmets and some sizes of boots. Should you wish to purchase these items Jolong Park can assist. Boots generally start at about $60 and helmets range in price from approximately $80 for a Dublin Onyx (which is a good standard model). All helmets must meet Australian standards.
As this is a school activity we ask that students wear their sports uniform. School tracksuit pants would be suitable to ride in initially rather than going to the expense of purchasing jodhpurs at this stage. If you do wish to purchase jodhpurs, the Cornish College Equestrian Uniform allows for either navy or beige jodhpurs. For colder weather students may wear their sports jacket or parents may wish to purchase an appropriate riding vest/jacket (ideally navy) and riding gloves.
Each lesson will contain both riding tuition, horsemanship and a technical component. For further information on the details of riding lessons at Jolong Park please contact Natasha Keetley on (03) 9781 9000.

“What a great start to the new Cornish College Equestrian Program. The staff were most welcoming and fantastic with both the parents and the kids and the facilities are amazing. Can’t wait to see how our Equestrians progress. Thank you for organising it all.”
– Emma Hartridge (Parent)
“Just quick note to congratulate all those involved with getting this off the ground. Our girls attended the first lesson on Tuesday and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. The hospitality was out of the top drawer, with the team extremely accommodating and very friendly, displaying patience and a positive attitude throughout. The facilities are fantastic, both for riders and spectators. When all the development is completed I believe it will be a spectacular venue. Very well done”
– Bruce Stradling
